So life here has settled down a great deal. Training is over (thank god), and I am now at my site where I will be living for the next two years!
I am sorry for not posting regularly, but once I am settled in and have my new house (which is now picked out and will begin to work on in just two weeks)!
My site is wonderful! I cannot really describe it here as it is something one would have to see to understand. It is a rather large site with a lot of people, tucked away at about 7000 ft elevation in the middle of the country. I am close to everything one could need in life, from waterfalls, to Marrakesh, I am truely lucky to be where I am.
My language has been coming along little by little, and it turns out I am actually not that bad at it! To my own surprise, I actually passed the language proficieny interview and I am on my way to speaking some bad ass berber (my site uses a combo of about 50 percent tamaziert, 30 tashelheet, and 20 perent their own dialect, these would all fall under berber).
I have already found an association to work with that is looking to construct 20 bathrooms in homes in the neighborhood next to my own. I am very excited about this as finding motivated people can be somewhat difficult. I am the tenth volunteer at my site, and I will admit this was somewhat discouraging at first. This project is actaully quite spectacular to fall in my lap the way it has, but it will be 6 months before I can write a grant proposal in order to get it funded.
For the next 6 months, I will basically be learning language, making a home, and socializing with others in order meet my community and become intergrated. This experiene is very differnt than what one could ever imagine it to be, but so much fun!
Some things of interest:
Time- this does not exist here really. I do not use it often and neither does anyone else. I would say all together it is generally irrelevant unless I have to be somewhere for Peace Corps.
Work- define this. Work here is not what work is in the United States, and if you try and translate this to Morocco, you will not be successful here and will probubly ET (leave early).
Personal Space- lol, this is very foreign to Moroccans as they do everything together and being alone is seen as a pretty strange thing. Setting boundaries from the beginning is key but still does not always work.
Contradiction- Morocco is known as the cold land with the hot sun. You can apply this to just about everything here. I can promise you one thing if you come here, nothing will make sence, and there is no such thing as common sence.
PS- Turns out the reason I get sick all the time is because I took a shower, i drink to much water and sleep when I do not feel well.... who knew?
